At last there is some good news for Sussex Police who have had a troubled time in recent years.
New figures show it is one of the few forces in England and Wales to be succeeding in reducing violent crime.
Detections have risen every month since June, improving what was once one of the worst records in the country.
The force's achievement in solving two out of three violent crimes is particularly gratifying.
With a new chief constable in place, the force is now ready to put the past few bad years behind it.
But the police must not be complacent as there is still much more to be done to meet high public expectations.
