Carol Pearce gave up her job in the City to have children. Now she helps keep thousands of other youngsters entertained.

Carol is one of a team of researchers who produce the Let's Go With The Children series of books.

She is responsible for the Sussex edition, a guide to attractions in the county that are suitable for children.

Carol, of Wickham Way, Haywards Heath, is an expert on where to go and what to do.

She spends six months of the year visiting farms, parks, museums and castles, checking attractions and their facilities.

She said: "I've discovered places I didn't know existed and visited others I might not normally have gone to.

"We're very lucky in Sussex, there's so much to do."

Carol's children James, nine and Victoria, seven, and husband Stephen, also contribute.

She said: "I make most of my visits while the children are at school but we make some as a family and they give me their views.

"I often pick out those elements I think might capture my children's attention. I'm writing from the parent's point of view so I'm always on the look out for those extra little pointers."

Among the Pearce family favourites are Bodium Castle, Herstmonceux Science Centre and Fishers Farm Park.

Carol's friends also use her as an oracle on how to keep their children occupied.

She said: "They often ask for advice and we discuss the places I've visited. The saying is so true - if the children are happy, the chances are the parents are happy too."

The book has sections on boat and train trips, farms, nature parks, theme parks and historic sites.

Carol said: "And it's not just about going to attractions that cost money.

"We are very lucky in Sussex to have not only the lovely countryside but also the sea on our doorstep.

"It's easy to sometimes overlook the natural attractions where children tend to make their own entertainment."

After researching her facts and checking every detail, Carol spends the rest of the year editing, promoting and distributing the book.

For each copy sold, a donation of 6p is made to Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.

The publishers have been supporting the hospital since 1998 and have so far donated £18,000.

Let's Go With The Children 2002, Sussex, costs £3.50 and is available from bookshops, libraries and many child-friendly outlets.
