Residents are invited to look at proposals to stop Horsham town centre being clogged up by on-street parking.

The plans are designed to deter all-day commuter parking, make it easier for residents and visitors to park and improve road safety.

The proposals, put forward by West Sussex County Council, are a direct result of concerns raised by residents about parking in the town.

They concentrate on areas around the station and hospital where there have been problems with commuter parking.

The plans are set to be implemented once a park-and-ride scheme for 467 cars opens at Hop Oast, just outside the town centre.

Tex Pemberton, Cabinet member for strategic environmental services, said: "After the success of these operations, we intend to decriminalise parking in Horsham, which means parking attendants will replace traffic wardens to control parking in the town centre."

Residents, traders and visitors are being invited to see the latest proposals at the town's library in Blackhorse Way, where they will be displayed for three weeks from Friday, April 5.

Residents will have a further three weeks to make representations of support or objection to the parking scheme.

These should be made in writing to: County Secretary, County Hall, Chichester, West Sussex, PO19 1RQ, quoting ref. HW8/9/36/2.
