More than 1,000 handbags were stolen in clubs, pubs and restaurants in Brighton and Hove last year.

The loss was worth £164,000 but police and traders are now fighting back.

Sussex Police has spent almost £1,000 on 300 specially-designed clips which women can secure to bags under tables or bars.

Police are supplying the Chelsea Clips throughout The Lanes and city centre.

The clip, made of hardened plastic, opens one way, enabling owners to slip straps on, preventing the opportunist thief from snatching them.

PC Matt Ebeling, Regency area beat officer, said: "It won't stop thieves cutting through bag straps but it will deter them.

"The extra time and effort taken to get the bags will put them off.

"Bag thefts cause a lot of heartache and worry for victims. Besides the loss of valuables, owners often have to cancel credit cards in case they are used by the offenders.

"We hope the presence of the clips alone will remind everyone to keep a close watch on their belongings."

Police have 30 packs of ten clips and window stickers announcing the campaign.

A third of pubs and clubs in the city now belong to a Pub Watch scheme and PC Ebeling is hoping more will join.

Managers who spot drunks, rowdy customers or crime suspects can page all other members with warnings and descriptions.
