On Saturday, March 23, I was parking at a local shop to buy The Argus and a CD when a traffic wardens' car screeched to a halt behind me in Hythe Road.

At the busy junction with Ditchling Road, two traffic wardens climbed quickly out of the car and rushed down to a car parked illegally outside the Co-op in Ditchling Road.

There was no one in the car, the owner obviously being in the shop. When she came out, they took details.

Was it really necessary to screech to a halt on a busy corner and park not only illegally on what were unfinished double yellow lines (with their waiver displayed) but also park dangerously on the junction, blocking the view of other motorists and making it difficult for them to negotiate the bend and putting pedestrians at risk?

The car they were after wasn't going anywhere because the owner was not in sight.

While they were talking to the lady concerned, another car pulled up and parked illegally.

One of the wardens stopped to talk to the driver, saying "Hello, Graham..." and generally chatting.

The driver then got out and went into the shop. Nothing more was said to him. One rule for one and one for another?

Other passers-by commented on this too. When I asked the warden why he was parked in such a dangerous position when there was plenty of room further up, he told me it was none of my business and he was allowed to park where he liked.

I did say I was aware he had a waiver but it would be better not to park dangerously or behave in such a manner.

He was rude and somewhat threatening, using his uniform to intimidate.

This is surely unacceptable and does nothing to promote the new parking department.
