Worthing is pulling out all the stops to celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee in style - and here's the line-up of events.

The town will spend more than £30,000 to mark the 50th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth's accession to the throne.

The borough council is putting up £20,000 towards the cost.

A further £10,000 has been pledged in private sponsorship, including £500 from The Argus, which will go towards a children's parade and ice cream party.

From 10am to noon on Saturday, June 1, a seafront parade will start at Steyne Gardens, involving up to 400 children wearing homemade crowns and cloaks.

The council is calling on leaders of schools and youth groups to attend a masterclass at Thomas A'Becket First School, Pelham Road, Tarring, on April 24.

The Mayor will light the borough beacon situated between the Pavilion Theatre and the Lido at 6pm.

The Mayor is holding a civic reception in the marquee, with guests in evening dress, from 7.30pm.

Members of Worthing Flower Club will decorate the marquee.

At 10pm, guests will watch fireworks on the seafront, provided by Selsey company Selstar.

It is being organised by Lancing firm Peter J Hill Associates and will start with a laser show.

This will lead into a fireworks spectacular lasting 21 minutes.

Music and dancing will continue in the marquee until 12.30am.

Tickets for the civic party, costing £25 a head, are available from Wendy Knight.

On Sunday, June 2, the marquee will play host to a church service, led by Worthing Churches Together, from 2pm to 3pm, featuring dance, drama, community singing and the Salvation Army band.

This will be followed by tea at Steyne Gardens Methodist Church.

On Monday, June 3, there will be a jazz and blues Picnic in the Park concert in Steyne Gardens organised by Worthing Progress Group, starring international jazz singer Lee Gibson, from 1.30pm to 10.30pm There will also be guided walks around the town centre at 11am on June 3 and 2pm on June 4. During the weekend, a traditional funfair and jubilee market will operate along the promenade from Splash Point to Heene Road.

Through Worthing in Bloom, the town will be decorated with red white and blue flowers and two Jubilee-themed carpet badges will be planted in Denton Gardens and Beach House Park.

Traders will be encouraged through the Town Centre Initiative and the Chamber of Commerce to decorate shops with bunting and flags.

Some have already done so, including CB2 Clothing and The Catalogue Shop, both in Chapel Road.

The Catalogue Shop has also donated 30 Union flags which will be used to decorate Jubilee events.

The borough council is planning to put up specially-designed jubilee shields on lamp posts and is considering draping two giant flags, the Union standard and the ensign of the Royal Navy, from the upper windows of the town hall in Chapel Road.

Wheelchair-bound multiple sclerosis sufferer Moira Luck, 59, of Leighton Avenue, is expected to carry the baton for the Worthing leg of the nationwide Queen's Jubilee Baton Relay.

She will be accompanied along High Street by her dog Harley, trained by Canine Partner for Independence, one of the charities chosen by 2001-2002 mayor Valerie Sutton.

Street parties in Hythe Road, Gorse Avenue, Seamill Park Crescent and Saxony Road have been given the go-ahead, with further applications from Selden Road, Honeysuckle Lane, Hill Barn Lane, Nutley Close, Robson Road and Lincoln Road being considered. Selden Lawns on East Worthing seafront will be renamed Windsor Lawns, while the refurbished promenade land train has been christened Jubilee.

Buckinghamshire flag-making firm George Tutill has donated a specially-designed Jubilee flag to The Argus seafront flag appeal.

The Argus will hand it to the council for display outside the town hall.

So far, Union and England flags have been donated by: The Argus; Goring Residents' Association; Stephanie and Dave Leigh, of Sugden Road; Albert White, of Eastcourt Road; Worthing Dynamos FC; Mrs Moira East, of Hythe Road; The Royal British Legion; the Combined Ex-Services Association; The Cavendish Hotel; anonymous (2); Worthing Boys' Club; Worthing Homes Ltd; Worthing Progress Group and the 3rd Worthing (Broadwater) Cubs.

The aim is to get 30 flags by Monday.
