Friends and relatives filled a chapel at a special mass in honour of Brighton stabbing victim Danny Collard.

Mr Collard, 20, a former pupil of Cardinal Newman School in Hove died from a knife wound to the heart as he walked home after an evening out on Friday.

His family were joined by teachers and old school friends for the service at the school's chapel.

School chaplain Father Paul MacMahon said: "There was meaning to Danny's life, even though it had been so short.

"We are tempted to say what a waste but that is also a misunderstanding. We cannot say that life is wasted if there is love coming from it."

Mr Collard's mother, Ann, described her son as gentlemanly and compassionate, a "lovely young man".

Mrs Collard, of Lower Bevendean Avenue, Brighton, said afterwards she was glad so many people had come at such short notice.

She said: "It is comforting because we might have to wait quite a while for the funeral."

Police have renewed their appeal for witnesses to the attack, which happened as Mr Collard walked home with friends from the Hare and Hounds pub at 9.45pm.

Officers were continuing door-to-door interviews in the area near London Road station.

Magistrates agreed a police application to continue questioning a 20-year-old man, who was arrested on Tuesday, until 6.30pm this evening.

Another man in his 20s arrested at the same time has been released on police bail.
