Police today issued this photograph in the hope it will shed light on a teenager's death on a West Sussex railway line.

Patrick Cummins, 16, of Gerald Road, Worthing, was reported missing by his worried parents when he failed to return from a friend's party in East Preston on Saturday night.

His body was found by a train driver at the side of the track between Bairds foot crossing and Ferring Road crossing, Angmering, on Sunday morning.

Detective Inspector Alan Jenkinson said: "This is a very concerning incident.

"We do not know his body came to be by the side of the track. It's not a straightforward death."

Patrick's tearful father was too upset to speak about his son's death today.

Mr Jenkinson said Patrick's death was not being treated as murder, although all avenues were still being investigated.

He said: "It could have been caused by some other person.

"It could have been either end of the spectrum - either a complete accident or there could have been someone else involved, which would mean manslaughter or murder.

"We would like people to come forward who saw Patrick leave the party to provide answers not just for the investigation but for the peace of mind of his family."

Anyone with information should ring British Transport Police on 0207 391 5265.

Patrick was a GCSE student at Chatsmore Roman Catholic High School in Goring.

On the Friday before his death he was included in the school photograph.

Deputy head Anne Ward said: "The school is terribly sad at the tragic loss of a young life."

Students have filled in a book of remembrance which they will give to his parents.

They are holding special services as a tribute to Patrick today and tomorrow.
