I read with interest Gerald E Spicer's comments (Letters, March 23) regarding the dangers to light aeroplanes if Eastbourne Borough Council set off 500 balloons to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee.

The council would be bound to take this into consideration prior to the event, although it would be fair to say the balloons would separate with height.

Large flocks of birds and even radio-controlled model planes, especially if being flown near the flight path of an airfield, could prove more hazardous to a pilot.
