Brighton and Hove Conservative city councillor John Drake has died in hospital after a short illness.

Coun Drake represented Westdene ward for many years on Brighton Council and then the unified city council.

He was admitted to the Royal Sussex County Hospital two weeks ago with chest problems and died aged 77.

A solicitor at Scotland Yard, Coun Drake was a tireless worker in the ward.

He was best known for taking up residents' concerns when Brighton and Hove Albion wanted to move to Withdean Stadium for a temporary period.

Councillor Ann Norman, who chairs Pavilion Conservatives, said: "John always gave strong support to the association and to me as a councillor."

Tory group leader Brian Oxley said: "John was admired across the council. He was a man of high integrity who was well liked."

Mr Drake's wife Pat is one of the longest-serving Tory councillors in Sussex.
