A prison officer who smuggled a "mini drugs supermarket" into a prison has been jailed for seven years.

Andrew Hubbard smuggled heroin, cannabis and body-building drugs worth more than £1,500 into Lewes prison, Hove Crown Court heard.

The drugs, and syringes, were found during a spot check on prison staff arriving for work on July 17 last year.

Hubbard had hidden them inside a kitbag belonging to another officer.

He told officers conducting the search "this doesn't look very good" when they discovered the drugs inside a box.

Hubbard, 39, who lived in Worthing at the time, had denied ten counts of possessing controlled drugs with intent to supply.

He claimed he had no idea how they had got into the bag and said they must have been put there by someone else.

The jury took two hours to find him guilty of all ten charges.

Hubbard, who had moved to Devon, showed no emotion at the verdict.

Julian Dale, defending, said Hubbard would not have an easy time in prison.

During the trial it was suggested Hubbard had acted out of "sympathy" for the plight of drug addict inmates in his charge.

The box the drugs were found in was described as a "mini drugs supermarket".

Judge Suzanne Coates, sentencing Hubbard to seven years, said: "You have breached the trust placed in you by employers and colleagues."

A spokeswoman for the Prison Service said: "Lewes, like every prison, has a priority to keep drugs out of the prison. We take the issue very seriously."
