Once again, Mothering Sunday has been and gone and, once again, most people got it quite wrong.
Many years ago, young girls from poor families used to be sent to better-off families as nursemaids or maids of all work because there were no other jobs available.
On one day a year, usually in Lent, they were allowed home for a bit of mothering.
It was the children who benefited from Mothering Sunday (not Mothers' Day) - not just any mother, as today.
