A prison officer attempted to smuggle heroin, cannabis and steroids into Lewes prison, a jury has been told.

Wraps of the drugs were found in a kitbag carried in to the prison by Andrew Hubbard, Hove Crown Court heard.

The court was told Hubbard, 39, was stopped during a staff spot-check as he arrived for work on July 17, last year.

He was carrying a holdall, used to store riot control gear, which belonged to another officer, a jury was told.

The court heard the drugs, with a street value of more than £1,500, were found in a mobile phone box and another container inside the bag.

Michael Warren, prosecuting, said there was enough cannabis to make 390 joints.

Hubbard, who at the time lived in Worthing, denies ten counts of possessing controlled drugs with intent to supply.

Prison officer Jerald Standing, said he found what appeared to be wraps of heroin in the kitbag during the search.

He said: "As I took them out of the box, Andy Hubbard said, 'This does not look very good'."

Hubbard was taken to the jail's security block, where he agreed to be strip-searched.

The jury was told he had co-operated fully with both the police and prison investigations into the incident.

It heard he had a second job in Worthing as a nightclub doorman. He now lives in Chagford, Devon.

Hubbard told the court he had no idea how the drugs had got into the bag.

He said he had offered to take it back to the prison after he went on a riot training course with another officer.

Hubbard said he had, instead, left it at home until his fiance nagged him to move it.

He said: "I put it into the boot of our car, which did not lock.

"It stayed there for about three weeks until I was arrested. I left it there when I parked outside the nightclub I was working at. Someone else must have put it in the bag."

The trial continues.
