Crawley's Premier Division title bid is back on track following a dramatic 4-3 victory over Cambridge City.

Danny Carroll hit an injury-time winner as Reds, who have slipped from top spot in recent weeks, rode their luck with an erratic display.

Manager Billy Smith said "This was the first bit of good fortune we have had all season.

"We were definitely struggling for legs in midfield and I think the pressure is taking its toll on the players now.

"This win leaves us just two points behind the leaders in third place with Tamworth dropping two. If we do win the championship, we will have to look back at the Cambridge game as possibly where we turned the corner."

Smith paired Keith Sharman and Ben Judge at the back, with Stewart Holmes coming in at right back because Lee Doherty was suspended.

But Reds had a nightmare start after 14 minutes when goalkeeper Andy Little collided with the post as he collected a header from former Wycombe Wanderers FA Cup hero Roy Essandoh and allowed Kevin Wilkin an easy tap in.

Carroll equalised eight minutes later when he guided the ball beyond goalkeeper Matt Nurse after Holmes had won possession.

Dave Harlow, twice, and Carroll went close before Ian Payne scored with a penalty two minutes from the interval after Tim Wooding was adjudged to have fouled Ben Abbey.

Cambridge regained the initiative in the space of three second-half minutes. Wilkin broke through and despite suspicions of offside he centred for Matt Beall to level after 51 minutes.

Ninety seconds later, Little flapped at a Richard Skelly corner and Wilkin headed Cambridge in front.

Loan-signing Gez Murphy went closest to getting an equaliser while there were also chances for Sharman and Warren Bagnall.

Judge did level for Reds four minutes from time when he followed up a rebound after a Carroll effort had been half-saved by Nurse.

Carroll secured three points when he headed home a Holmes cross.

Top scorer Matt Allen suffered a dislocated shoulder as Eastbourne Borough overcame Spalding 2-0 at home in the eastern division.

Ben Austin and Darren Baker sustained knee injuries in the second half as Borough paid a high price for the three points.

Borough were reduced to ten men as all their three substitutes had been used when Baker went off five minutes from time.

But they were able to dominate throughout.

Allen put Borough ahead in the 27th minute after a Matt Crabb cross from the left was played back by Dave Adams.

Borough stepped up a gear after the interval.

Adams hit the second goal from an acute angle on the right after a fine through ball from Paul Stevens in the 64th minute.

The Borough substitutes were a handful with Andy Ducille twice going close and former Eastbourne Town youngster Mark Goodwin foiled by the lunging boot of Mark Huggins after outpacing the visitors' defence.
