A woman who shaved her hair off before it fell out during chemotherapy has raised thousands of pounds for charity.

Relatives and friends cried as Chantelle Penderghast's auburn locks fell to the floor of the Henty Arms pub in Ferring, near Worthing.

The 22-year-old Brighton University student began chemotherapy for a brain tumour the week before.

St Barnabas Hospice, based in Columbia Drive, Worthing, will have its funds boosted by £2,500 thanks to the fund-raiser.

Chantelle, of Dorchester Gardens, Worthing, said: "I have had long hair all my life so it was scary. I couldn't look at the hair when it went. My mum and my best friend Sam were crying.

"My head has felt quite cold but I am really pleased I did it. I was going to lose my hair soon anyway so shaving it for charity makes it more worthwhile."

Chantelle was joined in the charity shave by her boyfriend Marc Stevens.

Brothers Dave and Andy Carlyle and Simon Winbow also joined in. Funds were further boosted by a raffle with prizes of champagne and meals donated by pub landlord Vernon Carlyle, father of Dave and Andy.

Chantelle discovered she had the tumour after a scan at Worthing Hospital last April, by which time she had already lost the sight in her right eye.

The non-cancerous tumour is sitting on the optic nerve and cannot be operated on.

In October, she underwent chemotherapy to reduce the growth but it was unsuccessful so she started a second course of stronger treatment.
