With five games to go, time is running out for Brighton if they are to pip Holcombe to the Kent/Sussex Regional League title.

Both sides recorded big wins last weekend to keep Holcombe top of the table by a point.

With a better goal difference, Brighton need the leaders to drop some points somewhere but that is looking increasingly unlikely.

Holcombe must still play Mid Sussex, Worthing and Crawley plus fellow Kent sides Ashford and Blackheath.

Four of those six occupy the bottom six places in the division and only Blackheath appear strong enough to offer a serious challenge.

For Brighton's part, they must win their remaining games against Gillingham Anchorians, Mid Sussex, Worthing, Ashford and Blackheath. After seeing his side beat Horsham 6-2, Brighton skipper Carlo Missirian said: "With five games to go we just have to take it one game at a time and not worry too much about Holcombe.

"If they drop points, then they do. We just have to make sure we win our games."

Brighton were 4-0 up inside 15 minutes against a Horsham side which turned up with only ten men. Goals either side of half time from Mark Ansell and Will Wassell, his first in the league, made it 4-2 early in the second half but Brighton soon resumed control.

Paul Daniels finished with a hat-trick, Richard Cooke chipped in with a brace and Simon Warringer also netted.

At the other end of the table, rock bottom Crawley gave themselves a glimmer of hope with a 3-0 victory over Worthing.

Needing to win five of their remaining six games to stand any chance of survival, Crawley started well with chances for Jerome Starkey and captain Terry Higgs.

Worthing were reduced to ten men when Lee Martin was sin-binned and Crawley took the lead when Pete Waller scored from a short corner.

It was 2-0 at half time when Adrian Shuttleworth touched home a goalbound shot from his skipper to register his first goal for the club.

Gary Thornton made a couple of fine saves to preserve the lead and Crawley wrapped up victory when Higgs fired home in the second half after a good move involving Keith Frimley, Steve Curd and Jamie Westwood.

Mid Sussex suffered a disappointing 4-1 defeat away to Herne Bay.

After falling behind early in the second half, Mids drew level when Duncan Wood-Allum scored from a short corner.

However, Mids then conceded three bad goals in less than ten minutes and there was no way back.

In Kent/Sussex Division One, Crowborough's sorry run continued as they suffered a 5-2 defeat at home to Marden Russets. Steve Alcock and Darren Pulman, with his 12th goal of a productive season, scored for Crowborough.

Eastbourne's interest in the EHA Vase ended as they were beaten 1-0 away to Hull YPI.

Despite enjoying most of the play and hitting the post three times, Eastbourne succumbed to a breakaway goal.
