The Sussex Police Authority's boss was meeting Home Secretary David Blunkett today in a bid for more money to fund radical changes to the force.
Chairman David Rogers was due to discuss the recent publication of the Police Reform Bill, which proposes measures including a new independent police complaints commission.
Mr Rogers said: "We welcome many of the proposals. I look forward to hearing much more about the Home Secretary's reform programme.
"We want to continue improvements in performance but I will be seeking reassurances about the level of resources which will be made available to us."
The bill includes a package of measures to support police officers in fighting crime.
It proposes to give new powers to police support staff to help police clamp down on antisocial behaviour.
