Cardinal Newman School (Hove) has enjoyed triple success in athletics, football and rugby.

Their athletes claimed three firsts and a second out of six categories at the Brighton and Hove Schools Cross Country Championships.

Newman's Year Seven girls' team came through with Hannah Curtis (first), Vicky Schofield (fourth), Harriett Holliday (fifth) and Abigail Reeves (seventh) making up the scoring team.

Katherine Rowan (sixth), Hayley Moore (eighth), Rebecca Ward (14th) and Beth Langday (21st) led the Year Eight and Nine girls' side home first.

Luke Whittington, Iain Plant, Jason Lee and Alan Ndikurio grabbed the first four places as the Year Ten and 11s triumphed.

The Year Eight and Nine combined boys' team were runners up thanks to Shaun Wares (fourth), Simon Mitchell (seventh), Joe Wilson (12th) and Matthew Maskell (23rd).

Newman reached the second round of the English Schools Unders-16s Girls' Cup with a 4-0 victory over Simon Langton (Canterbury) in Kent.

Sophie Perry (2), Poppy Ogilvie and Jo Norman were on target.

In rugby, Newman enjoyed a double success against Chichester High with the Year Eights winning 35-5 and the Year Nines 29-7.

But their West Sussex opponents overcame them at Year Seven (15-5), Year Ten (27-5) and Year 11 (30-0).
