I am sorry Rosemary Ure (Letters, December 5) is saddened by the national anthem not being played at the theatre. I think I have the reason.
Some time ago, I went to a concert theatre where the anthem was played. I stood smartly to attention thinking of the Royal Family, the Union flag and the days of Empire - totally ignoring the horrendous noise and struggling massed humanity all around me - only to find, at the end of the anthem, I was the only one left in the theatre.
Worse still, I discovered I was locked in, the staff having left with the audience.
Since then, I make sure I am first out by being practised in leaping over rows of seats and standing on those who are a bit slower than me.
I am afraid, Ms Ure, we have to keep up with the times, which I am sure the Queen understands.
