A woman came forward to clear her name after police released her photo in connection with credit card fraud at a travel shop.
Police released the CCTV footage of the woman after foreign currency was bought with a counterfeit card at Going Places in Crawley.
Horrified at seeing her picture on the front page of The Argus, she went straight to the police, who have since ruled her out of their inquiries.
Officers had suspected the woman because the time on the surveillance cameras matched the time on the receipts of the fraudulent transaction, which took place on Friday, September 7.
A spokesman for Sussex Police said: "The Argus correctly reported we needed to trace her, and using the media was probably the only way of eliminating her from the inquiry."
