A dozen police in riot gear smashed their way into a council flat in a drugs raid today.

It was the latest in a string of operations to round up users and pushers in Brighton and Hove.

A man and woman were arrested at the flat in Moulsecoomb and taken to the John Street police station for questioning.

Officers wore protective clothing and carried riot shields as they entered the flat this morning.

A search found a quantity of cannabis and some white powder, thought to be crushed crack cocaine.

Inspector Rob Carden, north Brighton police commander, said: "This was the latest in an on-going effort and I can promise all those who deal in this trade there will be more."

Mr Carden and his team of officers have been targeting hardcore drug dealers for months.

The raids have netted thousands of pounds in crack cocaine and heroin and a string of prisoners.

The blitz began in May and was due to end in August but proved so successful it was extended and will continue indefinitely.

Police have discovered they are chasing a small number of pushers round the city and they appealed to members of the public to come forward with information about their whereabouts.
