Eastbourne Borough crashed to a 2-1 defeat against Ashford Town at Priory Lane after conceding a 58th-minute penalty.

The first half saw an uncharacteristically sloppy performance from Borough and they deservedly went behind on 24 minutes.

Nathan Godden gave away a needless free kick on the edge of the area and John Mowlem took a free kick which lacked any power.

But what looked like an easy save turned into a nightmare for keeper Paul Stark as the ball crept under his body into the back of the net.

Borough rallied after the setback and Gavin Geddes went close with a header.

With two minutes before the break, Borough got the equaliser.

Paul Stevens won a free kick on the edge of the area and John Westcott brilliantly curled the ball into the top corner.

Borough dominated the earlier stages of the second half but the visitors regained the lead after Ben Austin's innocuous challenge on Ian Ross saw the referee surprisingly point to the penalty spot.

Nolan scored with the penalty kick.

Borough received a boost when Ashford were reduced to ten men on 67 minutes after Sam Saunders was shown his second yellow card, but Borough could not take advantage of this and had slumped to their first defeat in 11 games.
