Yet another trendy, noisy pub has opened. So-called Toad At The Picture House, in the converted cinema in East Street, Brighton, comes complete with DJs, karaoke, "electric beats" on Thursdays, a dance floor for 150 people and all the rest of the fashionable requirements.

Pubs are becoming less and less distinguishable from nightclubs. Pubs, it seems, provide booze with loud music, whereas nightclubs provide loud music with booze. When the licensing laws are finally liberalised so both pubs and clubs can open all day and every day, the distinction will be further reduced.

Meanwhile, are there any pubs left that haven't been trendified? Are there any that don't have blaring music, whether piped, live or disc-jockeyed?

Is there anywhere old codgers like me can sit with a quiet pint and have a chat in peace? When will the owners of these synthetic pub chains realise there's quite a market out here for the opposite of what they provide? There are an awful lot of people over 40 who don't want DJ-blare and flashing lights. And, funnily enough, some of us have spending power.
