A Euro MP who took part in a mass demonstration outside a nuclear submarine base has been fined £150 for a breach of the peace.

Caroline Lucas, Green MEP for South-East England, was found guilty of obstructing a road and blocking the flow of traffic at the entrance to the Clyde Naval Base at Faslane, Argyll, on February 12 this year.

Lucas, 40, who lives in Oxford, pleaded not guilty to the charge, claiming it violated her right to free expression and peaceful demonstration as set out in the Human Rights Act.

She was among almost 400 people arrested by Strathclyde Police during the demonstration, which was organised by anti-nuclear groups Trident Ploughshares and CND.

About 1,000 demonstrators attended the protest.

Following a two-and-a-half hour trial at Argyll and Bute District Court in Helensburgh yesterday, she was found guilty by magistrate John McPhail and ordered to pay a fine of £150 within 28 days.

The MEP told the court she intended to appeal against the verdict.
