Lewes climbed to fifth place in National League division one after a 2-1 win away to Chelmsford.

Teenager Steve Edmonds, a summer arrival from Brighton, grabbed his fifth goal in six games before Will Champness struck a 50th minute winner.

The match had started badly for Lewes as the home side took a fifth minute lead when a free hit outside the circle was deflected home by Alan Thorogood.

But Lewes took a grip after that, controlling the rest of the half and creating a string of chances which went begging.

They finally drew level four minutes into the second half when a long pass from Champness sent Barnaby Stubbs away down the left. His cross to the top of the circle was picked up by Simon Owen who took it on and crossed in front of the keeper for Edmonds to sweep the ball home.

The winner came from Lewes's third short corner of the game with the pace of the strike from Champness deceiving the home keeper.

East Grinstead were embroiled in a controversial finish for a second successive week as they drew 3-3 with Ipswich.

Having fought back from two goals down to lead 3-2, Grinstead were denied victory when a last minute hit from just outside the D was allowed to stand despite going in via Andy Medcalf's stick.

Player-coach Ian Pattison said: "Ipswich celebrated, the umpires conferred and gave the goal, much to our disgust.

"Their No. 10 celebrated but the goal was given to No. 27, which says something about it."

After falling behind to an Ivan Smith goal on 15 minutes, Grinstead made a tactical change as they brought on 16-year-old Charlie Pine for his first game and reverted to four in midfield.

This move seems to work with Pine playing well, although chances were not taken.

Grinstead started the second half badly, though, and it was no surprise when Richard Fox put Ipswich 2-0 ahead eight minutes into the half.

Three minutes later Duncan Howarth pulled a goal back and that sparked a flurry of three goals in seven minutes. Richard Payne levelled matters with a controversial penalty flick and then Matt McNeill put Grinstead ahead with his first goal since returning to the club.
