Campaigners for the release of the deputy head jailed for the murder of Billie-Jo Jenkins have taken their battle to Sussex's new police chief.

The Justice for Sion Jenkins group has voiced unease about Jenkins' conviction for killing his foster daughter Billie-Jo in 1997.

The group has maintained pressure on Sussex Police and the Government to try to secure Jenkins' release.

Now they see Ken Jones's appointment as chief constable as a potential fresh start.

Mr Jones, who is currently deputy chief of Somerset and Avon Police, was named as the top officer for Sussex earlier this month.

He will start his new job in the New Year.

A spokesman for the Justice for Sion Jenkins group said: "This is an opportunity to rebuild confidence.

"The first step has to be an acknowledgement of the serious errors which have taken place."

Jenkins, former head designate at all-boys William Parker School in Parkstone Road, Hastings, is serving a life sentence in Wakefield prison, West Yorkshire.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "We cannot comment because Ken Jones is not in post yet."
