Eighteen flats for local people have been built as part of an effort to breathe new life into part of Eastbourne town centre.

Fifteen one-bedroom and three two-bedroom flats will provide up to 39 people with homes at Haughton House in Seaside Road.

Its opening by mayor David Stevens on Wednesday follows five years of work by Eastbourne Council and Southern Horizon Housing Ltd.

Coun Ann Murray, council spokesman for residential services, said: "The flats are of an exceptional quality and will provide local housing for local people.

"Below the flats are three contemporary shop units which will again help build new business opportunities and aid the regeneration of Seaside Road."
