Parents and teachers are worried that double parking outside two Brighton schools could lead to an accident.

They fear it is only a matter of time before there is an incident outside St Luke's Infant and Junior Schools in Brighton.

Despite warnings from both schools, some parents persist in double parking when dropping off or picking up their children.

This reduces visibility for pupils crossing the road.

Nesta Saunders, headteacher of the infant school in Queen's Park Rise, said: "I have written to parents on a number of occasions, most recently in our newsletter.

"We have even had a project in the school where the children have designed their own posters about the subject.

"Parents are generally very worried about double parking - as we are.

"There are ample car parking facilities in the adjacent streets and it just means walking a bit further."

Ron Guildford, head teacher of the junior school in St Luke's Terrace, added: "It is a nuisance, certainly.

"I would like the problem highlighted. Nothing else has worked in the past."

Mr Guildford said previous clampdowns had been organised with the police and parking wardens but the problem soon returned.

Mother-of-two Alison Thorpe, who lives off Elm Grove, said a lot of parents were angry with people double parking and described the situation as "an accident waiting to happen".

She said: "It is very hard to cross the road because so many people double park.

"All it would take is for some people to get tickets for double parking.

"People who get there early to park legally get blocked in.

"There was a parking attendant there on Friday for the first time since September but they said they could only ticket cars parked on the zig-zags and not those double parked."

She said she usually walked her two children Victoria Thorpe-Marlow, eight, and four-year-old Ben Poulton to the schools.

Occasionally, she said she drove but would park a few streets away and walk the remainder.
