Two youngsters could make their senior debuts for Sussex in the LTA Women's Winter Cup.

Carly Homewood (Brighton) has withdrawn from the squad which increases the opportunities for Joasia Zajac (Uckfield) and Natasha Khan (Brighton) to make their first appearances.

Sussex play in Group Two at Bolton from November 29 to December 1.

Captain Julie Dawson said: "I'm disappointed Carly has pulled out because I understood she would be available for county matches, but she has told me that she is playing in another tournament.

"Yet the younger two, who are both 14, have shown me how keen they are to play and learn. Both Joasia and Natasha have been playing well lately and getting good results.

"I have included them because I intend to give them a match. Otherwise that would be just like toying with them."

Dawson hopes she can include British No.1 Julie Pullin.

"It would be great to be able to include Julie for her ability and experience," added Dawson. "I'm trying to get her but there may be a tournament in America she is involved in that would clash.

"We certainly need her because we have to play Middlesex who have a very strong team which includes Elena Baltacha, Anna Keothavong and Jo Ward."

Sussex will also play Oxfordshire and Lancashire as they bid for a place in the top group.

Dawson said: "Our chances are slim but it would be nice to see Sussex back in the top group as we haven't played in it for years.

Sussex squad (provisional): Julie Pullin (Hove), Jheni Osman (Eastbourne), Julie Dawson (Horsham), Helen Mitchell (Southwick), Nicola Gerrett (Crowborough), Kirsty Woolley (Worthing), Joasia Zajac (Uckfield), Natasha Khan (Brighton).

Joasia Zajac, the 14-year-old from Uckfield, has won the LTA under-15s Regional Challenge at Welwyn Garden City, overcoming Amelia Frendo (Hertfordshire) 7-5 6-2 in the final after defeating Emma Priest (Essex) 6-2 6-2 in the last four.

Julie Salmon remembers the European Women's Team Championships as "good fun".

British No.1 Julie Pullin, from Hove, has been in the latest squad in Prague this week.

Salmon, a former Wimbledon player from Brighton, said: "I was with Clare Wood, who is also from Sussex, Monique Javer and Jo Durie in the Nineties and the Championships were good fun. I'm sure they still are."

Sussex under-13s beat Surrey on sets after drawing 5-5 in the Berkshire Inter-County Shield at New Malden.
