Georgia Adams has followed dad Chris, the Sussex cricket captain, on to the county sport scene.

The tennis youngster celebrated her eighth birthday with a call up to the county nine and under tennis squad.

And mum Sam admitted she is a chip off the old block.

She said: "Georgia is so competitive, just like her dad. I don't know whether that's a good or bad thing!

"Sport is certainly in the genes in our family. Chris' brother has played County Second X1 cricket and his mum Lyn is a tennis coach and PE teacher.

"I was always keen about sport at school, playing tennis and netball. Whatever was available.

"Georgia seems a bit of a natural. She's a bit of a tomboy and runs around in an Arsenal shirt. She loves her sport. Ever since we can remember she has wanted to hit or catch a ball.

"She has got involved in cricket through the local Henfield Leisure Centre and loves that But cricket is taking a back seat at the moment as she develops her tennis.

"We let her have a hit with Tony Clark, who is a Sussex coach, at Wickwoods in Albourne and then asked her how she enjoyed it. She loved it and now we go there once or twice a week.

"She has a very good coach in Julie Dawson, who used to play tennis professionally, and is coming on."

A sign of Georgia's development is her county selection. Sam said: "Now she is in the county squad it means every Wednesday we take her to St Bede's school in Eastbourne to be coached by Jane Nash.

"But she's very down to earth about it. I'm all for shouting it from the rooftops but she doesn't like a fuss.

"Chris and I are keen for her to keep up her interest. She is developing a serve and volley game and is as keen as mustard."

Georgia won her second tournament, the Sussex Junior Winter Championships at Comptons, Horsham.

Proud dad Chris said: "My wife's taken control of her tennis but Georgia has got an eye for the ball. She is a good height and that should help. I think tennis is definitely her No.1 sport now and she will play cricket here and there."
