Climate change campaigners will target three filling stations in Brighton and Hove on national Stop Esso Day, December 1.

Esso stations at Denmark Villas, Dyke Road, and Lewes Road will be picketed as the Stop Esso Campaign resumes following the September 11 terrorist attacks.

The American multinational has been singled out because of its opposition to policies that aim to tackle climate change.

Ian Davey, of the Brighton, Hove and Mid Sussex Friends of the Earth, said: "Climate change, despite everything else that is happening in the world, is happening.

"The United States is the culprit, Esso is the main villain. The aim is to hit them where it hurts most, in their business - and to let them know destroying the planet's atmosphere and remote regions, where there are oil fields, is not acceptable in the name of profits."

The demonstrations are part of a national day of action, which organisers have pledged will be non-violent.
