A Brighton parks footballer has called for kick-off times to be scheduled around the two minute's silence on Remembrance Sunday.

At present many games in Sussex are underway when the traditional two-minute silence takes place at 11am on November 11.

But Daniel Geal, 25, of BHA Supporters in Sussex Sunday League division nine, would like games to be played around the ceremony, allowing all Sunday footballers to pay their respects at 11am to the nation's war dead.

Daniel said: "Although we were playing at 11am, prior to kick-off both teams observed a one-minute silence to mark this important date.

"But people seeing us playing at the time may have got the impression that footballers do not care about remembrance.

"This is far from the truth. The silence was touching, the standing in a windy field poignant. We did not choose to kick-off at 10.30am and would have preferred 10.15 or 11.02.

"Maybe for next year, the league will consider moving or postponing matches to enable everybody to show their respects."

Geal's suggestion has found support among older members of the public such as 83-year-old Iris Moore of Shoreham.

Mrs Moore wrote to The Argus last week saying how sorry she was to see young footballers playing at 11am on Remembrance Sunday.

She added: "I felt very upset about it but when you are in the middle of game it must be difficult to stop. It would be a nice gesture if they could arrange matches around 11am in future. It is all the more important with regard to what is happening in the world today."

When Park Life brought the issue to the attention of the Sussex FA, they said they would look into the matter.

Chief executive Ken Benham said: "It is a fair point, but the responsibility is with the individual leagues. I will raise the matter. However unless we as a county impose a directive then the individual leagues must address the situation."
