The boyfriend of drugs coma victim Amy Pickard has died after being found unconscious in public toilets.

Police believe the death of 22-year-old Michael Morfee may have been drug-related.

Mr Morfee was found collapsed in the same toilets where pregnant teenager Amy was discovered unconscious in June, having been injected with heroin.

Amy, 17, was found locked in a cubicle with Mr Morfee. She later gave birth to her baby while in a coma but the child died five days later.

Mr Morfee, of Malvern Way, Hastings, was found in the toilets at Harold Place on Tuesday and died later in the Conquest Hospital.

His brother Daniel Morfee, 29, of Magpie Close, Hastings, said: "I have blocked it out until I see him, then it will be more real.

"He was a regular visitor to the hospital to see Amy but I don't think he could cope. He was so upset, what with losing the baby and what happened to Amy.

"He told me he couldn't cope and said I couldn't know what it was like unless I was in his shoes.

"When Amy collapsed I couldn't believe the pair of them did it. I don't know if it was the first time. He was so looking forward to the birth of the baby.

"He was a great bloke and his heart was always in the right place. He was a loveable rogue.

"Everyone has linked this with heroin but we just don't know yet."

A post-mortem examination did not reveal how he died and tests are being carried out.

Mr Morfee was on police bail with two other men while police investigated Amy's overdose.

Superintendent Paul Curtis said: "If this is drug-related it's another tragic waste of a young life."

A friend of the Pickard family said Amy's mother, Thelma, who has kept a vigil by her daughter's bedside, had been very upset by the news.

Amy has shown signs of improvement although she remains in a coma.
