Chris Baker's article "Routes for manoeuvre" (The Argus, November 8) suggested the South Coast Multi Modal Study (SoCoMMS) has ruled out the so-called "super-highway" along the South Coast.

In fact, the study - which was launched in June - is still evolving and all reasonable suggestions received as part of the consultation process are being considered.

The idea of the super-highway or, for that matter, any other ideas cannot be ruled out at this stage until the feedback has been assessed and an emerging strategy is developed.

It is anticipated this strategy will be delivered to the government office for the South East in summer 2002.

SoCoMMS, which involves extensive and wide-ranging consultation with the general public as well as special-interest groups, looks at every type of transport challenge across the area, from road and rail to walking and cycling.

It does not focus specifically upon road-building programmes as the only way of resolving problems.

The real issue is the sort of transport system people living and working in the area want to see developed over the next 10-20 years.

Anyone wishing to participate in SoCoMMS should visit the web site, socomms.org.uk, or call 020 7348 3062 for a questionnaire.
