Sussex have played a major role in opening a new section of the county championships in the 10-13 year age group where the future talent lies.
At a new venue - the Six Villages Leisure Centre in Chichester - Sussex hosted the inaugural matches against Surrey, Somerset and Berkshire. Sussex fielded two teams which meant each county played four matches.
Surrey won the day, finishing one point ahead of Sussex who won two matches and drew two.
Top scorer for Sussex was 12-year-old Andrew Waddingham from the Horsham club with seven out of eight victories.
Ben Brown (Balcombe) and James Winchester (St Leonards) each scored five wins. In the girls matches Stacey Furnival (St Leonards) was undefeated.
For the Sussex second team Liam Vine (Littlehampton) racked up six wins and Lisa Standen (Hastings) had five from eight encounters.
