A man was trapped in a lift one floor above a chemical blaze.

More than 100 people were evacuated from an industrial block in New England Street, Brighton, following the fire.

Firefighters entered the building yesterday at midday and the trapped man was released unharmed after three hours.

The fire broke out at a jewellery-maker's on the fourth floor of New England House when an employee dropped thinning liquid on electrical equipment.

Fire crews from Preston Circus, Roedean and Hove were called to the scene.

No one was injured.

Sub Officer Steve Tomlin said: "Unfortunately one person got stuck in the lift. We were concerned the fumes might escape into the lift-shaft where this person was trapped. But luckily that did not happen."
