There were moving scenes at war memorials all over Sussex yesterday as people observed Remembrance Day.

This year November 11 fell on a Sunday and it was also two months since the atrocities in America, which killed thousands of people.

Those taking part in ceremonies ranged from those who think all war is wrong, to elderly men and women who took part in the Second World War and a tiny handful who fought in the First.

The difference between those wars and the conflict in Afghanistan is sophisticated technology, which enables modern weapons to be far more selective in their targets.

But there may come a time when ground forces are committed by the US and its allies to fight terrorism, and then the number of casualties will rise.

The point of yesterday's ceremonies is to remember the sacrifice made by millions of ordinary people so the rest of us can carry on living in freedom.
