Albion staged a tremendous fightback to rescue a point as they drew 2-2 with Notts County in Peter Taylor's first away match in charge.

It looked all over for the Seagulls when they trailed 2-0 after 53 minutes to two goals from set pieces.

The fit-again Nicky Fenton headed in a Gary Owers corner for County on 41 minutes and fellow defender Ian Richardson headed home an Owers' free-kick 12 minutes later.

Seagulls were suddenly a different team once Taylor introduced Nathan Jones for Lee Steele. Gary Hart gave them hope with his second goal in three appearances on 63 minutes.

Then, after Paul Rogers and Dirk Lehmann had been brought on in a double substitution, Bobby Zamora nodded his tenth of the season on 73 minutes.

Albion made one change to the team which launched Taylor's reign with a 3-0 home victory over Oldham on Saturday.

Carpenter recovered from a throat infection, so he took Rogers' place in the middle of midfield.

Rogers reverted to the bench against one of his old clubs, despite scoring the opening goal against Oldham.

Oatway shrugged off a hamstring problem to take over the captaincy duties from Rogers once again as the Seagulls returned to the starting line up for their impressive win at Huddersfield in their previous away League game.

County made two changes to the side which suffered a fourth straight League defeat against Reading at Meadow Lane on Saturday.

Fenton returned from a hip injury at the heart of the defence in place of Warren, while skipper Owers was preferred in the centre of the park to Caskey.

Albion, starting brightly, came agonisingly close to taking the lead in the third minute.

Grayson was still off the pitch for County, having received lengthy treatment, when Watson pulled a corner back to fellow fullback Mayo. His cross-shot from wide on the left went over keeper Mildenhall and struck the far post, then Steele headed over the rebound from point blank range.

It was the sort of opportunity Steele might have been expected to bury following a purple patch of four goals in as many games.

Taylor marked out Allsop as County's main danger before the match. The Aussie striker scored on Taylor's last visit to Meadow Lane with Gillingham, a 1-1 draw two seasons ago.

Allsop, who scored twice against Reading to raise his season's tally to 11, looped a header narrowly over the crossbar, although Kuipers on the 50th League appearance of his career had it covered.

Albion were looking more like the home team in terms of possession, a corner count of 3-0 in their favour reflecting their territorial supremacy.

Midway through the half one of Watson's trademark quick free-kicks was volleyed over with his weaker right foot by the unmarked Zamora, although it would not have counted as the linesman was flagging for offside.

Morgan collected the first caution of the contest in the 28th minute for deliberate handball when misjudging the bounce of a clearance.

Hart demonstrated great determination to get the better of two opponents in a defensive position as the Seagulls continued to look the more confident, which was perhaps not surprising considering the contrasting recent form of the sides.

Allsop had his name taken on 33 minutes for not retreating after Albion had been awarded a free-kick.

A minute later Hackworth's diving header was held by Kuipers after Allsop had got the better of Cullip down the left flank to cross.

This first incisive move by County lifted the home support. Albion had otherwise looked comfortable at the back, but chances had so far been few and far between at both ends.

Albion fell behind against the run of play with four minutes of the half remaining. A corner by Owers, County's first of the match, cleared Kuipers and was headed home from inside the six yard box by Fenton. It was a rare error by Albion's big Dutch keeper, who is usually commanding in such situations.

Albion's deficit doubled eight minutes into the second half after Oatway had been cautioned for a foul on the surging Cas down the right wing. Owers' resulting free-kick was headed home by Richardson from ten yards.

Albion, now with a mountain to climb, introduced Jones for Steele on 57 minutes.

This prompted a switch to a 4-3-1-2 formation, with Jones as the left sided central midfielder and Brooker playing just behind Hart and Zamora.

Hart halved the Seagulls' arrears in strange fashion on 63 minutes. Mildenhall was stranded way off his line when he headed clear and Zamora's shot towards the vacant net from wide on the right was helped in by Hart from the edge of the area.

The Seagulls, suddenly with a chance of salvaging something, brought on Lehmann for Brooker and Rogers for Oatway in a double change on 68 minutes, while County introduced Stallard.

Zamora headed the Seagulls level at the far post on 73 minutes after Cullip had nodded Jones' long throw.
