Did you know there are more than five billion web sites available on the

internet?

The publishers of The Very Best of the Web realised this was a real problem for many people and have come up with a book featuring more than 1,000 carefully-selected web sites to appeal to a wide variety of tastes and requirements.

Despite the author's best efforts, this is definitely not a cover-to-cover read, although the content is undoubtedly fascinating.

The book has all kinds of links to mission-critical information. As a Chinese food addict, I have always wanted to find a web site that would tell me how to make proper chicken and sweetcorn soup with all the translucent gloop, real sweetcorn and chunks of chicken: www.chopstix.co. uk provided the answer in seconds.

Fans of wacky journalism will love www. the onion.com and will hoot at www.themightyorgan. com. Both offer an irrev-erent insight into the world of newspapers.

A more useful set of sites were found in the public transport section. One, www.pti.org.uk offered information about the UK transport system with a wealth of detail concerning fares, timetables and route planning.

For frustrated London Underground users, www. tubehell.com is all about misery in the underworld. Read it and laugh!
