Lewes are one match away from the first round proper and are the only team from FA Cup: Sussex left in the FA Cup.

But boss Jimmy Quinn was far from happy with his side's consistency against the County League's sole survivors.

As a player and manager Quinn has never given any less than 100 per cent and he demands the same of his players.

He insisted on a heart-to-heart with the team to thrash out his Ryman division two outfit's approach to the tie.

The Rook manager said:

"Our attitude is not always right and on occasions Hassocks did to us what I wanted us to do to them. We missed a lot of chances but in the end it was comfortable enough.

"Last season it was all about the League and nothing else mattered. This season we set our sights on reaching the first round proper and now we're only 90 minutes away.

"As the last Sussex team left in we are bound to be the centre of attention and that's good for the club."

Lewes were in charge from the start and their young striker Sam Francis was man-of-the-match.

Quinn said: "I've got no doubt that Sam is potentially the best striker in Sussex."

Francis started and finished a move on seven minutes but was unlucky to see his header hit the base of the post with goalkeeper Joel Harding beaten.

Lewes had a shock four minutes later when Jamie Graham set up James Laing to beat big Ross Standen from inside the box.

Rooks were level three minutes later through Francis who volleyed home from a Dominic Shepherd nod-back.

Despite dominating and creating all the chances, it was not until the second half that Lewes could breath easily.

Ross Venables struck from a corner just two minutes after the restart and it was all over when Paul Thomsett and Francis did the spade work to leave Shepherd a simple finish on 64 minutes.

Lewes chairman Terry Parris is pleased with the growing bank balance, the win taking their FA Cup earnings to £26,000.

But he is even more delighted to see youngsters turning up to watch the team. He said: "The money will be really handy as we've already got planning permission for a new stand at the clubhouse end but to see youngsters coming to watch with their parents is the real encouragement."

Hassocks boss Dave John accepted Lewes were worthy winners.

He said: "It's been a great run for us and we went out honourably. We had our moments but failed to hold the lead for long enough.

"They are a good side.We wish them the best of luck in the next round."
