A fire that swept through a farmhouse and killed a retired teacher was not being treated as suspicious, police said today.

The body of Jean Wood was pulled from the burned out remains of the house in West Sussex yesterday, more than 24 hours after the fire started.

Police said today that there was no evidence the fire had been started deliberately.

A force spokesman said: "The cause of the fire is still being investigated."

Firefighters called to the house in Treyford, near Midhurst, on Friday were forced from the building when the roof collapsed.

They returned to recover Mrs Wood's body, found in the living room of the house, yesterday afternoon as forensic experts sifted through the remains.
