Heads of security could have deployed Sherman tanks and 25- pounders at a fraction of the cost and disruption to the public outside buildings used for the Labour Party conference, instead of crash barriers.

Think of the other benefits, too.

Tanks would have prevented the likes breaching the barriers and two rounds' worth of smoke from the guns would have prevented the eyesore of the decrepit West Pier being shown all around the world on television.

And don't forget, any attacks from demonstrations or ships at sea could have been more easily dealt with.

Just a thought from an old soldier of the field.
