Crawley booked an FA Cup third qualifying round clash with Dr Martens rivals Weymouth last night after an emphatic victory over Fareham Town at Broadfield.

Relieved Reds manager Billy Smith admitted: "This game was a potential banana skin.

"I noticed Kingstonian got knocked out by Brockenhurst, who are in the same league as Fareham, so it can happen to anyone. We are just pleased it is not us."

He added: "I think the players were tense and they really didn't play in the first half as I wanted them to.

"Most people came here expecting a 4-0 win and the crowd were tense too.

"They only got behind us when we were two or three up.

"This was a game we could have lost so I am very relieved."

Steve Restarick, on target in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Fareham, was again the dangerman for the Reds and he headed Smith's side in front in the 28th minute.

Dave Harlow robbed the visitors' Gary Franklin on the left and crossed to Restarick, who planted a firm downward header past Lee Webber at the back post.

The goal came after a period of sustained pressure from the home side, who had initially been frustrated by their lowly Jewson League opponents.

Former Lewes striker Warren Bagnall headed over in the 11th minute and moments later the Crawley No. 9 pulled the ball back to Restarick who had a shot blocked.

The visitors did trouble the home team's defence, and John Ugbah in particular.

Mark Chamberlain's side had a goal disallowed in the 15th minute when Fareham's Mark Patey swung over a free-kick which Bjay Green headed in only to see it ruled out for offside.

Then Crawley keeper Andy Little had to be off his line smartly in the 30th minute to thwart a Fareham attack as Lloyd Mitchell's defence- splitting pass released Martin Whittaker.

After going ahead, the home team wasted two good opportunities to extend their lead.

First Bagnall exchanged passes with Danny Carroll and pulled the ball back to the Crawley skipper Luke Anderson but he dragged his shot disappointingly wide.

Then a minute later Restarick tricked his way down the left and crossed to Warren Waugh who headed wide.

And in the 41st minute there were farcical scenes in the Fareham dugout.

David Barclay trudged off to be replaced by Scott Thornton but the substitute had first to change into Barclay's shirt before stepping on to the field with the strip deliberately inside out to conceal the number.

After the break Bagnall twice went close to doubling his side's lead.

In the 51st minute he fired over the bar and four minutes later Bagnall headed a Restarick cross just wide.

The closest the visitors came to scoring was in the 77th minute when the excellent Patey curled in a right foot shot from outside the box which Little did well to claw out.

Crawley made the game safe with half an hour remaining as Carroll put them two ahead.

Waugh was fouled and from Ian Payne's free-kick an unmarked Carroll headed in on the six yard box.

Bagnall got a deserved goal 12 minutes from time when substitute Rob Collins released him down the middle and he slotted the ball under the onrushing Webber.

But midfielder Dave Harlow saved the best goal till two minutes from the end as he struck a rising drive into the top right hand corner.

Lewes put in a much improved performance at Gosport Borough in their FA Cup replay and won 2-0 to set up a local derby with Hassocks in the next round.

Chris Johnson fired just wide of a post after only two minutes as the Rooks started positively and Gosport's cause was not helped on 22 minutes when they were reduced to ten men as Sid Sanderson was dismissed for foul and abusive language disputing a decision.

Seven minutes later Lewes took the lead when Andy Johnson released Dominic Shepherd who finished well to beat Gosport goalkeeper Mark Brown with a low shot.

The second goal for Lewes came on the hour mark with a neat interchange between Sam Francis and Shepherd, who was left to score his second with another low shot.

Two minutes later an ill-disciplined Gosport side saw Perry Holland sent off for a second dreadfully late challenge on Justin Harris and with three minutes to go they were further reduced to eight men when Stuart Henson was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Despite just one change in each side's line up from Saturday's abandoned first meeting, St Leonards altered their formation but not to good effect as they lost 3-1 to Fisher Athletic in their clash.

Both sides showed their early desire for a goal and chances were created but the finishing was off target.

Fisher's Tony Dolby hit a post and the ball was scrambled away on 19 minutes.

From the resulting corner, the normally reliable Odlum in the Saints goal spilled the ball to the feet of Ben Taylor who made no mistake from the edge of the goal area.

From keeper Henry's long throw out on 36 minutes Dolby increased Fisher's lead.

John Mighty added a third with a diving header on 40 minutes from Kwaski's cross.

Chances went begging at both ends in the second half before Saints got a last-minute consolation when goalkeeper Henry held back Tony Reid and Dominic Barclay scored from the penalty spot.

Final score: Crawley Town 4, Fareham 0
