Worthing's Simon McNamara finished a close third in the Surrey League's road race at Handcross.

He led with two other riders from the start of the 65-mile race.

The field hardly had time to find top gear before McNamara (Team Synergy) joined Paul Pickup (Liphook Cycles) and London rider Andres Meilak (Team Omega) in an attack.

The rest of the field assumed the move was too early to succeed but the trio pressed on and were five minutes ahead by the time they contested the finish.

Pickup was the first to begin the final sprint and was two lengths clear of Meilak at the line, with McNamara just behind in third place.

McNamara said: "This circuit is a tough one and at times I was just managing to stay with the other two."

Crawley rider Steve Elms (In Gear) won the Surrey League promoted 15-mile time trial at Rusper. Elms clocked 33min.34sec to beat London star Tim Stevens (Team Clean) by 12 seconds.

Veterans from the Sussex and Surrey VTTA promoted an open 25-mile time trial at Maresfield and victory went to Hastings clubman Peter Trados, of the VC Bayeux.

Tadros recorded 53min.52sec while Dave Pollard (In Gear) was the fastest over-40 rider with 57min.2sec for second place.

Peter Hamilton (34th Nomads), placed third with 57min.10sec.

Harry Featherstone (Eastbourne Rovers) recorded 1hr.2min.55sec and the amazing 68-year-old beat his target time by almost 19 minutes to win the veterans' handicap.

The HQ for the Surrey League's time trial on Saturday is the village hall at Coolham, near Billingshurst. The first rider starts at 1.30pm.

On Sunday there is racing at the Goodwood motor circuit. The first race is at 9.30am and the main event starts at 11.30am.
