Bognor earned praise from boss Jack Pearce as they went top of division one thanks to a 3-1 home win against mid-table Oxford City.

Rocks leapfrogged over previous leaders Harlow who were beaten 2-1 at Northwood.

Pearce said: "I felt 1-0 at half-time wasn't a true reflection of how well we played and the final score line flattered the visitors slightly."

Nicky Wyatt replaced Simon Funnell, who was not fully fit, for Bognor but the visitors had to reshuffle after three players were ruled out because of a car accident two days before.

Bognor looked lively in the opening stages but some early balls from Richard Hudson were wasted, although David Wright hit the post from a Jody Rowland cross.

Matt Russell opened the scoring for Rocks in the 21st minute with a header from a deep Wyatt cross.

Wright then headed a Michael Birmingham cross over and Wyatt went close with a volley.

Russell was just unable to connect with a fine cross into the box from Hudson just after the restart.

Funnell replace Wyatt and combined with Hudson to set up Russell to bundle home his second in the 74th minute.

Matty Whitehead, who hit the bar with a first-half free-kick, went one better with a set piece seven minutes from time, curling an effort around the wall and into the top corner of the net past the despairing Craig Stoner.

The visitors' goal was merely a late consolation and on the stroke of full time Birmingham wrapped up all three points as he drilled a low effort inside the far post.

Worthing were hit by a shoulder injury to midfielder Danny Davis in a goalless division one draw at Tooting and Mitcham.

Rebels played the final 29 minutes with a man advantage after Tooting midfielder Noel Frankum was sent off for violent conduct.

But Worthing were unable to make it tell as Davis went to hospital soon after and, with Rebels rhythm disrupted, Tooting finished the stronger.

Frankum received his marching orders for stamping on Ben Carrington after initially fouling the Worthing man who operated on the right of midfield.

Worthing, without the suspended Marc Rice and with Gavin Geddes, Darren Baxter and Paul Kennett all injured, did well and came closest through Mark Burt just before the break.

A free-kick from Mark Knee was headed on by Burt but goalkeeper Tony Webb tipped the ball over the bar.

Gavin Jones and Andy Alexander formed an inexperienced Worthing front line but Jones twice went close.
