Bank holiday sunshine brought almost 5,000 people to the Newhaven, Peacehaven and Seaford Lions Club donkey derby.

The event raised about £5,000 for causes such as Leo House children's hospice and help pay the running costs for the Lions' two minibuses.

Lions Club spokesman Colin Meagher described the event at Martello Fields, Seaford, as a great success.

He said: "We have trained children from Rottingdean stables to race the donkeys and people can have a bet on the races.

"The mayor of Seaford opened the derby and the car park was overflowing with visitors."

The show also included karate, kick boxing and bird of prey demonstrations.

The winning programme number was 0809. The winner should contact treasurer Les Coombs to collect a £100 prize.
