Residents have presented a petition to their council against plans for a 47ft mobile phone mast at a Horsham beauty spot.

One 2 One want to put a mast on a patch of grass outside Ghyll Crescent in Hammer Pond Road.

Residents have reacted angrily, saying the mast would be an eyesore and should be placed elsewhere.

They presented the 320-signature petition to Horsham District Council and are calling for people to write and object.

Residents' spokesman Peter Thompson, of Ghyll Crescent, said: "We are in an area of outstanding natural beauty and we are doing everything we can to oppose the mast.

"What concerns us is how easy it is for them to get their towers up. All they have to give is 42 days' notice and then if there are no objections they can put it up. It is quite shocking.

"We as residents are trying to alert other people to this problem. We are concerned about the health issue and we want to know if they have an obligation about where they locate the mast."

A spokesman for the council's planning committee said: "It is not a planning application but a prior notification, which runs for 42 days.

"If it goes to committee, officers will recommend the position of the mast. There have been 33 letters of objection received."
