An injured man crawled to a phone box to dial 999 after robbers attacked him with baseball bats in Seaford.
The victim was walking between the Beachcomber pub and the Methodist Church yesterday when he was set upon by three men.
The assault left him with a deep gash on the back of the head and his wallet was stolen.
Police have described the incident, which happened between 12am and 1am, as "very serious".
They are appealing for anyone who saw the victim or his attackers to contact Seaford CID on 0845 6080999.
