Matt Smart will be hoping to add some buzz to the Eastbourne Borough side this season.

The busy midfielder, signed from Horsham, is one of the men manager Garry Wilson hopes will make Borough more tough to beat on the road next season.

Wilson said: "I was happy with our first season in the eastern division but the travelling did take a while for some of the boys to adjust to.

"Our home form was good enough for a side going for promotion, so if we can be harder to beat away it could be an interesting season."

Wilson has stuck by most of the team from last season. Only Simon Colbran (Rye) and John Snelgrove (Seaford) have left the club.

The Borough boss said: "I wanted to keep John for another year, because he has been an excellent servant to the club. But he didn't score as many as he might have hoped at the higher level and has decided to move on.

"Simon has gone too, but we've made seven new signings and the squad does have more depth to it now."

His biggest summer scoop, along with the capture of Smart, was St Leonards marksman Keith Miles.

Miles has been a potent force in the Premier and Eastern Divisions and will be reinstalled to his centre forward role after being played in midfield at Saints.

Wilson said: "Keith is a quality player and always scores goals. Up front is his best position and he will be just concentrating on that.

"Before he was doing lots of off-the-field activities, but at this stage of his career he should only be worrying about playing."

The club are progressing off the pitch too. Work has almost been completed on the Priory Lane ground to bring it up to Premier Division standards.

But Wilson admitted the club are still not ready to promotion.

He said: "If we win a promotion spot this season, we'll take it, but we are a year away from being completely ready for the step-up.
