Five people today had to abandon their sinking boat after a collision between two fishing vessels off the Sussex coast.

The crew of the stricken boat - thought to include two children - had just enough time to clamber on board the other vessel as theirs sank.

Two lifeboats were called to the scene of the accident, 16 miles off Beachy Head.

No one involved is thought to have been seriously hurt.

A Coastguard spokeswoman said: "They obviously must have had time to abandon their boat but it must have been fairly hurried. There are no medical emergencies as far as we know."

An investigation will be launched into the collision, which happened shortly after 2pm.

It is understood that at least two of those rescued from the boat, which left Newhaven earlier today, were children.

The accident happened in thick fog.

The second fishing boat was from Sovereign Harbour, Eastbourne.
